Student Life

Primary Program
The Primary program is a carefully prepared environment with a full spectrum of Montessori materials designed to meet the developmental needs of the 3 to 6 year old child. Our classrooms have the traditional 3-year age groupings. The older children have the opportunity to help the younger children, which reinforces their own skills while allowing a sense of leadership to grow. The younger children enjoy observing and learning from their older friends while getting an exciting glimpse into what they will soon be learning.

Lower Elementary
According to the detailed observations of Dr. Montessori, the development of the child between the ages of 6 to 12 years is focused on the development of internal organization of thoughts and ideas, the capacity for imagination and the thirst for understanding the universe. Dr. Montessori designed a curriculum for these years that would continue an education for peace and global awareness. The Cultural Studies of history, geography, zoology and botany are integrated into an understanding of the universe and life within it, thus giving a context for everything studied during the lifetime of the individual.

Upper Elementary
9 – 12 year olds are mastering many skills and moving into a place of competence and confidence. They work well both independently and within a group. Their organization and time-management skills are nicely developed. They approach decision-making and rule following from a greater moral and ethical context. One hallmark of this age group is their increasing ability to take leadership roles in the school community and beyond.

Middle School
Academic topics in Middle School are taught in an integrated context, and applied to ongoing projects in the classroom and in the community. Students use information and techniques from many disciplines to guide their inquiry into complex real world issues. Our foundational courses in Environmental Science and Human Rights are closely related as students explore sustainability and other socialissues. Pedagogy of Place, the practice of viewing one location as a cross section of many ongoing issues is central to our approach.
